what do people mean when they say "i am my own person"? how can you be someone else's?

Haven't you ever felt like you weren't 'your own'? Like you didn't belong to yourself?

Hasn't a parent, or a friend or a teacher ever said something or pressured you into something and thought later "I did it 'cause they made me. I wasn't ME. The person I am wouldn't do, or say, or choose like that."

That's what the phrase is talking about. It's talking about not letting your will be taken over by someone else.
