College Essay- Losing My Hair

Question Posted Wednesday October 21 2009, 8:46 pm

So, for my college essay I was thinking of writing about a point in my life when I basically had to cut all my hair off because it was falling out. I'm a female, and at the time short hairstyles weren't in fashion and we know how society judges people. I am also an African American so the pressure of keeping up to date is even worse in my opinion, compared to any other race. But,my goal isn't to make the person who's reading my essay pity me or whatever. I built my self confidence and learned to deal with the troubles that life sometimes offer and how i over came my obstacles. Do you get how i'm trying to come across? do you think this is a good topic choice? What do you think?

Anything could be a good or bad topic depending on how you write the essay. It's all about how you portray yourself and your writing style. As long as you veer away from the self pity, I think it would be an excellent choice. Be sure to focus the essay more on what you learned from the experience and how it affected you in the long run as opposed to the superficial aspect of losing your hair and it should turn out to be an amazing paper. Good luck :)

I think that would be a wonderful topic. I completely understand what you are saying. My mom passed away and we have been having a couple problems and hard times and i wrote an essay about it. I dont like ppl feeling sorry for me either but i wrote it because i wanted to. So yes you should write about it.

I find that I am a great deal older than most of the advisers on this site, so my advice will be somewhat different from what you have received and may continue to receive from others.

It is always been said that when writing write about a subject you know something about; this you have, I believe, accomplished with your chosen subject. The hard part is going to be keeping the self-pity out of what you write as you are writing about something that happened to you.

Try writing your Essay in the third person, as someone reporting on what happened to you, this should help you keep the self-pity out of your writing. I would also suggest you emphasize what it took to overcome the obstacles, pear pressure of fashion and how building sell confidence helped overcome these things.

Yeah. I think I'm getting what you are saying. You are saying that sometimes in life, we have to do things that may not be so appealing to everyone else. But we end up having to deal with these things, be strong and gain so much out of it. Like how you gained your self confidence. But i think this is awesome. And amen to that haha...a lot of people don't really understand what African American women go through to maintain their hair. On the Tyra Banks recently had a show about "Good Hair". She talked about how there are less African American Women in the United States than Causasian Women, and we (African American) women spent 80% of all the hair products and supplies.Anyway i think your topic is perfect. Goodluck :)
