Good Skills

Question Posted Wednesday October 21 2009, 6:26 pm

Hi everybody,

I am writing my resume and I don't have much work experience except as a receptionist and as a cashier. I listed all my responsibilities in those jobs which makes it obvious for possible employers which skills I have so I am not listing those again. However, I have an appointment with AppleOne to help me find a job and they told me to list 5 skills ... I put stuff like:

Hard-worker
Bilingual
Puntual
Positive
Responsible
Goal-orinted
Works well with others
Types 68 wpm

Of course, thos eare all ture about me... but I can only list 5 because they clutter my resume. And I;m not really satisfied with them. I am not posting stuff like "cashier" or "knows how to use Microsoft Word and Excel" because I already listed those as responsibilities for my previous jobs.

Anyways, do you have ideas of what are some great general skills I can include or the skills employers look for the most or which one of those skills I listed should I include?

Your skills on a resume should always be concrete things; like typing. The soft skills, like working hard, being positive and punctual, those will come into play with your cover letter and interview. The resume is for solid facts only.

Things to include; your typing skills and bilinguality and computer systems that you're comfortable with. If you need to pad a little, add in customer service skills and something else fairly solid.

First I want to say that when they ask for skills they don't mean five words. Make phrases of those skills so they have more meaning. Otherwise they are just a boring list of cliches.

I'm going to list a couple websites that might be able to help.

This one talks about overused phrases in a resume and then shows how you can make them sound better. [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

This website has skill semployers look for the most. So it might give you ideas on what words you can write.

Another wedsite on words you shouldn't use.

This one is interesting because it talks about six skills to leave off of the resume. One of them is not to include the word per minute typing power. So i guess you can take that off of your resume.

Well, I really hope that helps you narrow down your list and make it sound better.

Best of luck!
