I know people who got pregnant while on their period, right before their period, right after, so protection is always neccesary if you don't want to get pregnant.
If your trying to have a baby, you or the woman can track their ovulation with a calendar and find out the most fertile days.

Her "period" is when the egg is being flushed out of the woman's system.
