Can probation officers search a home without a warrant?

Can probation officers break into your home and do a random search without a warrant when you're not there?
My boyfriend is on probation but I have a clean record. He has been going to classes, paying restitution, and working really hard. I've REALLY kept an eye on him and I KNOW he isn't doing bad things. He did miss one appointment with the Probation Officer and called right away to reschedule. I was really proud of him for taking responsiblity.
We were both at work the other day and they (the probation officers) came to our jobs and arrested us saying they searched our house and found something illegal. They claimed that they did not need a warrant to search our empty house. They never did tell me what they claimed to have found!
When they finally released me and I got home I found that they had broken in through the window (or so it looked like) and tore apart the whole house. I mean, it's a wreck...
