Volunteering at an assisted living

Question Posted Saturday August 15 2009, 5:14 pm

So I'm starting to volunteer at an assisted living next Saturday. I don't really know what all I'm supposed to do when I go. I know the main thing is just to be friendly and talk to them, play a card game with them, checkers, chess, bingo, etc., but what all could I talk about with them?

The main thing is to be extremely positive, friendly and calm. They should feel your good mood. Yes they really need to talk much. Ask them about something, and be ready to listen to.
Games is another good thing you can do with them. Don't wait for perfect playing! Scrabble, crosswords, checkers. You may also teach them some modern things, like computer ( I think it could be interesting for some of them). You may even let them play some games on your PC, like checkers ( I know one good site, where you can do it [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) )
Well, good luck! You're going to do a very noble thing!

Just being there makes a world of difference. Ask them to tell you about their lives. Many will have great stories about their spouses, their children, jobs they have had, so many things. Let them do most of the talking. Whenever you can relate to what they are talking about, chime in. If you see an opportunity to ask for advice, don't hesitate. This can be as rewarding for you as it is for them.

Well you can talk about almost anything! Like I'd prob. talk about what they like to do for fun, or the past experiences they've had in their life, just stuff like that. But prob. nothing too personal...unless y'all feel comfortable talking about it?
