Tips on getting good grades

Question Posted Friday August 14 2009, 6:55 pm

I am looking to get good grades this year in school. Usually I am an A-B student but I'd like to try to make straight As this year in school. I was hoping that somebody has some tips for getting better grades, or maybe even a top 10 ways list to get straight As. Anything would help though, really.

Well, just graduating high school this past year, I can definitely give you advice. I am actually a C student, but I ended up getting A's without trying very hard here's why
1. After school hours, the teacher knows that you really care about that class
2. Ask questions, that shows your paying attention and you are serious about the class
3. Ask the teacher how they are doing, how their placing their fantasy football teams (eg) because then if your on a boarder line between B+ A- they will give you the A- because you are a nice person (trust me :)
4. Don't procrastinate, I know it is so tempting, but just right down goals you have, in this case, receiving A's and look at them if you start feeling unfocused, and if you do, have cheese and crackers (weird, I know, but their is some chemical in the cheese that keeps you more steady and focused)
5. Come in with a positive attitude to class, and talk to your teacher about the next chapter you are learning, before you learn it, they will KNOW that you are a committed student.
6. Make a schedule. (Yeah your probably thinking, that you won't stick with it, but try once a week to stick with it) During the next few weeks, your brain will automatically do your schedule on another day and then add it on to another day, etc, etc.
7. Look online for other opinions or resources (just don't use their ideas), but in English class if you are reading a poem and don't understand it, try to guestimate what they are talking about, why you thought that, and then see what others think about it and why and explain your reflection to your teacher

Good Luck! :)

I get straight As. I'm not bragging, I'm just letting you know, so it makes sense when I say:

Here's what I do:

1. Everything the teacher writes on the board is on the board for a reason. Write it down, and know it.

2. Flashcards are your best friend. For vocab or anything.

3. Ask questions the second you don't understand something. If you wait, you'll forget you didn't understand it, and then it'll come to the night before a test, and you won't know how to do it on the test.

4. Have regular conversations with your teacher. About the subject, or really anything. I've found if you get on a good level with your teacher, they are more forgiving and understanding should the need come for anything.

5. DO YOUR HOMEWORK. I know that sounds super lame and obvious, but do it. You see, at my school, homework is optional.. kind of. We can't get a grade for just doing it.. if we get a grade, it has to be collected and graded. So, teachers don't give grades for it. And, since it's not a grade, people think: "I don't have to do my homework now!", which is SUCH BULL. Whether or not your homework is required or not, do it. Make a note of problems or questions you don't understand, and ask your teacher the next day about it.

6. Study for tests and quizzes at least a week in advance, or, if that can't be done, start the moment you know about the quiz or test. Cramming doesn't work. Ok, admittedly, I do it, but my brain remembers things really easily. But not everyone is like me. Take five to ten minutes a night to study material. Then, the night before the test, maybe do a full review of everything, but keep it under a half hour.

7. Take breaks when you're studying. Nothing is worse than studying for 5 hours straight. Take a break AT LEAST every hour.. but your best bet is to take a break every half hour. Get up from where you're working, walk outside, get a glass of water, have some fruit; do something that gets your mind off of homework for 5 minutes.

8. Believe in yourself. I can't tell you how important that is. You can go through all the mechanics, but if you don't believe in yourself, you won't get As. Trust me. Have confidence.

Good luck! =]

Well, study habits play a big role into grades.

Make sure you start studying for tests in advance not the night before. Using note cards to write down information or make flash cards is quite helpful too.

Re-writing information over and over, helps to make what you're trying to learn stick into your brain. So you can remember it easier.

When taking notes, dont worry about trying to write things down, focus on listening. If a teacher mentions something more than once that is usually a good indicator for you to write it down, and that it will be part of a test in the future.

Make sure you're getting enough sleep, balance your time after school.
