binge eating

Question Posted Sunday August 9 2009, 10:11 pm

16/f
I eat when I'm bored or depressed even when I'm not hungry, and when I do I eat until I can't fit any more food in me. Whenever I'm doing something, I'm also always thinking about what I'm going to eat when I get home.
I think these are signs of being a binge eater.

So my question is: What are some ways that I can get this under control? I've gained some weight and while I'm not overweight yet, I'd like to have this under control now. It's making me even sadder, which of course makes me want to eat more.
I feel gross and disgusting all the time, but I can't stop thinking about food.

Help?

First off, if you have alot of sweets in your house, ask whoever buys the groceries to start buying healthier food, like fruits and veggies that you like, this way when you do snack, you wont feel as bad. Celery is really really good to snack on when you get the urge to eat or are bored. Its basically nothing but it contains some sugar and alot of water. You burn off more calories than the celery puts on. Baby carrots are good too. Instead of regular potatoe chips, get baked they are tastier in my opinion, and are alot healthier!
Also, gum helps alot, it distracts your "stomach" if you will; and tastes good! Popcorn is another good, light, thing to snack on. But you have to make sure its not filled with butter. I always make home made popcorn, its better than the bag. Just put some olive oil in a pan, and pour the popcorn cournals into it once the oil is hot, then watch it pop!
Its important to remember that its okay to have that piece of chocolate cake, or ice cream sunday, you just have to keep portion control in mind. Its not what you eat, its how much you eat. If you are eating alot of fruit, its better than eating alot of cake.
Keeping yourself busy will help you too. Sports, hanging out with friends, going out, anything to keep you busy is great.
Writing down what you eat and the amount of calories you have consumed is good. Once you look at your paper and see what you have already consumed, it will make you rethink that extra bag of chips you want to snack on.
Another tip is to set a time for yourself, make a time at night where you cant eat. For example, try not to eat after 7pm.
Good Luck!!!!!
ps,
exercising will balance out the amount that you eat in a day. Also, drinking lots of water (even with a touch of lemon or lime) is really crucial and vital.

When you think about food and you are not hungry try and go for a walk or do something you like to do. If you have an urge for food you could also try going to a glass of water instead. Also, When you are hungry you could try drinking a glass of water first before eatting it will fill you up faster and prevent you from eatting as much.
