OBGYN question.

Question Posted Tuesday August 4 2009, 12:57 am

I've seen lately in a lot of your answers that one does not need to see an OBGYN. My doctor referred me to one about a year ago because I was having major issues with my period. Was this because he's a pediatrician, and pelvic exams are simply not his forte?

It could be. OBGYN doctors are good. Don't get me wrong. They are just not necessary for your average female problem. They are just more expensive than a Family/general practitioner.

So, that being said, I would hate for any female not to get care just because they believe an OBGYN is the only option they have. If you are diabetic and pregnant, or had another high risk pregnancy, I would certainly recommend an OBGYN.

If your doctor refereed you, and you have insurance to cover the visit, that's great! But for your normal pelvic exams etc. A Family doctor or general practitioner can do the same exam for less.

Doctors also tend to recommend a doctor they know.
Never hesitate to ask if an OBGYN is really necessary.
