a rumor about lice

Question Posted Sunday July 26 2009, 11:03 am

i heard that smothering your hair in mayonaise and leaving it on for two hours then after washing it rinsing it with viniger will get rid of head lice. Is this true?

No and yes.

The vinegar is to be placed on before anything and needs to be on the hair for HOURS. The vinegar penetrates eggs and makes the sticky parts on them dissolve so it's easier to lice comb them off.

The mayonnaise (better alternative is baby oil) only helps to slide the unhatched eggs off and prevent the bugs from being able to latch on and lay eggs onto the hair shaft.

The entire process is much more complicated then putting stuff on and rinsing it off. I have a complete home remedy method for lice removal written out here:

Like I said, it takes awhile to get it done but will do the job! If you have lice just follow my directions in that other Advicenator link and you will get rid of them in just a couple of days! :D

If you have any more questions please feel free to ask me! :)

ok i had a fiasco not long ago with head lice. i know i was embarassed. so i looked for discreet methods and this worked for me for real. the mayo essentially smothered them ... i knew it wa working when i took the cap off and they were dead in there some that fell off. gross i know lol. i washed my hair really good once, then smothered it in conditioner and combed it out really well with a real fine comb. there were loads of them and i just combed it until no more came out (getting close to the scalp).

it may not be a professional way to do it ... but it did work for me. just follow up and you should be fine.wash EVERYTHING you came in contact with and repeat a week or two later incase any nits were left behind. many suggest blow drying and flay ironing on me daily basis. the heat kills them

I don't know how affective this method is, but I wouldn't do it. It sounds messy and really unsanitary.

Go to the doctor or the pharmacy and get a reliable treatment instead :)

Actually when i was little i used the viniger method and it helped a lot. But if you go to walmart, they'll have lice kits that get rid of the lice a lot faster than any home remedy,in my opinion. hope i helped!

I have HEARD about it - apparantly it kills the eggs - if a few people have heard of this method, then it's obviously been done. The only way to know, is to try.

The most effective way I've learnt to deal with them is to STRAIGTEN my hair. The heat "frizzles" them - just wash you hair after wards to get them all out since there dead :) OR just cover your hair in conditioner and use a nit comb :)

Hope I Helped
