dyeing my hair

Question Posted Friday July 10 2009, 1:56 am

okay so i really want to dye my hair a bold color. today i tried dyeing it with kool-aid and it failed miserably. you couldnt even tell a change, i tried purple, and than blue, and neither of it worked. i have medium brown hair so its really hard to dye it a bright color, and all the websites i went on said i have to bleach my hair. like i want to use manic panic, special effects, or splat hair dye, but im really skeptical about bleaching my hair to get it to look bold. any suggestions? anyone thats ever done this have anything to say? like is bleaching your hair that bad? helppppp.

thanks in advance.

You really can't, sorry love. I was in your exact same situation a few months ago

I have reddish-brown hair, and about a year and a half ago, I asked for blonde highlights at the hair salon. I came out with the top half of my hair essentially bleached, with the slightest bit of hair dye in it that made it look normal/good. I hated how blonde it was- I wanted to be a brunette. I never bothered to dye over it because my hair was damaged enough because of the bleach. So I use a glaze from John Frieda to add different depths to my hair to make the bleached hair (which I don't have much left of now) look like highlights and my regular hair color to get my "highlight" color in it - if that made any sense... lol. So I tried to dye a few strands of my hair purple a few months ago - I think I used temporary ("5-7 washes," more like 1 lol) manic panic, i got it at Hot Topic - and you could kindasorta see it on my brown hair part but mostly on the bleached part. It didn't look weird, it just looked more obvious towards the bottom.

So if you still want to dye it, I'd make sure its permanent. Temporary isn't worth it. Bleach it (I'm not sure how, sorry, but if you look it up it shouldn't be that hard) then dye it.

And if you decided to bleach + temp dye, I'd advise you to use John Frieda Luminous Color Glaze in Brilliant Brunette after the dye washes out. Its $16 at Wal-Mart.

Hope I helped, hon :)

The whole kool-aide thing is new never heard of it.

If you want to dye your hair temporarly then I would suggest using manic panic and if you really want it too show then yes you might want to bleach your hair because if you dont it will only look more natural. I used the red color manic panic brand and it only lasted 2 days it washed out as soon as I took a shower and washed my hair. If you want a "HOLY COW" look then maybe try another brand of hair dye. If you want a more noticable look than you might want to bleach your hair first.
