what does AM and PM mean in reference to time?

Question Posted Monday June 29 2009, 10:46 pm

I know A.M. means in the morning and P.M. means in the evening after noon, but what do the abbreviations actually stand for? I've always thought of it was "At Morning" and "Past Morning" but I know that's just a silly childhood thing to help me remember which was which. Anybody know?

"Ante Meridiem" and "Post Meridiem" which in latin mean "before mid day" and "past mid day", respectively. In other words, before noon and after noon.
