History.. Why did Martin Luther criticize the Roman Catholic Church?

In layman's terms, he was mad at the Catholic Church. Like many others, he didn't like how corrupt they had become. They had begun selling indulgences, which were "pardons" for loved ones who had died, which, according to the Church, would shorten their suffering in Hell or purgatory.
He wrote 95 theses and nailed them to a church door

He, along with John Calvin, were the catalysts that started the Protestant Reformation.
