Question Posted Saturday June 13 2009, 10:04 pm

I'm fourteen
I'll be fifteen August Fifteenth
My parents are apparently running low on money and I'm getting tired of my dad yelling at me everytime I ask for ten bucks
I also need money so I can go out shopping and stuff
But because of my age. Not many places will hire
I'm thinking I'll be the only sophmore without a job come September
So, are their any places that will hire at fourteen?
Or even fifteen?
I live in northern New Jersey, if that helps

Thanks. (:

I'm in Massachusetts, and I know that waitstaff laws are a bit iffy. Usually you can get a job as a waitress or busser even at a young age; you get paid less than minimum wage but you rake it in in tips.

Also, just curious: where are the rest of the sophomores working? You could try getting a job there...

Are there any Ralph's Italian Ices by where you live? I know there's about a dozen in New Jersey. They hire at fourteen and it's really easy, everyone I know who works there loves it. You just hang out in an air conditioned little booth/shop and serve ices.

Many ice cream parlors (Baskin Robbins, Carvel, etc), movie theaters, and grocery stores hire at 14 or 15. The best thing you can do is just call around local shops; that's what I did to find a job for the summer ("Hi! My name is Rebecca, and I'm going to be fifteen. I was wondering if there were any positions available for September?"). Your best bets aren't big corporations, but little stores around town.

Good luck!

blue states might require you to get a job permit at city hall. its that way in Mass. but its all just checking local laws at that point. don't worry, there's always somebody who will hire you under the table in a trade shop. I was making ten bucks an hour at my first job when I was your age at a trucking company cleaning the trucks and doing generally anything that was needed done that required no skill. they're not glamour jobs, but they'll pay better than minimum wage, open your future career options in a trade, and no taxes. its all in family connections at that point though, ask your adult male relatives, parents of friends, neighbors, tradesmen will help out their friends or family with work. if you're a chick thats not a tomboy though, this last part's not going to help you. please specify next time so I can dig up better tailored options.
being human is all about who you know, keep that in mind, it'll help you with stuff like this no matter your career field.

Well I will correct some points here from previous answers.

For one, not every state will allow you to be hired at a chik-fil-a at 14. In my state, it's 16 years old. So not sure what state they're in.. I'd check your minor labor laws.

For Kroger, they can hire stockers and baggers at 14-15. But again, ask a manager if you're eligible in your state.

And yes, unfortunately they're minimum wage jobs. But it's a start, and it's decent pay for someone your age.

You can also do community jobs like babysitting, house-sitting, dog-walking, pet-sitting, lawn mowing, selling products (like yard sale, or create your own smoothie recipe), senior care -- help them with their groceries, you can do seasonal work as working at festivals, tutoring, teach seniors how to use a computer, landscaping, car washes, help out on a farm.. there are so many things you can do! And when I made my own business, I made so much money, that I miss doing it.

Also, your high school counselors can help you find jobs your age. Yeah, they can do that! That's part of their job -- to help students find employment and colleges. So try meeting with them. If summer break started, you can still reach them likely, but they have limited office hours. I'd definitely contact them ASAP, or go to your main office for more information.

Hope I helped.

Chick-fil-A hires at 14
Also, a couple restaurants hire at 15 for hosts/hostess.
Kroger does as well.
And I hope you don't mind, most of these places only pay minimun wage. /:
And of course, babysitting and whatnot. :P

Try McDonald's or other fast food places.

Also, maybe mow lawns in your neighborhood. Start a babysitting service. Sell lemonade this summer [kinda kidding, kinda serious]. Walk people's dogs.

The ideas are limitless.
