Is it normal for female cats to gain weight after they have been spayed?

Question Posted Wednesday June 3 2009, 10:43 pm

My 9 month old Maine Coon cat was spayed last week. Her operation went well and her cut on her belly is healing just fine; however, I have noticed that now after a week she is getting a little pot belly/lump right under the incision on her belly. Is this normal? Has this ever happened to anybody's cat after they were spayed?

I work at a vet clinic, and we commonly get questions from clients about this.

First, yes it is common for cats to gain weight after being spayed or neutered. But, 1 week isn't long enough for you to notice a difference.

"a little pot belly/lump right under the incision on her belly." From what you've mentioned, it seems like your seeing some kind of reaction involving the incision (aka her cut on her belly). The way that it was most likely closed was that your veterinarian used sutures underneath the skin. They will tie a knot on the lower portion of the incision, so that there is more suture underneath the skin at that point. This will somethimes cause a small suture reaction, and will cause a small lump to appear under the skin. This is usually not painful, and will heal fine.

That's my take on it. If the incision is not very red, swollen, hard, warm, or painful to your cat, then I would say it is a normal suture reaction. But if you are seeing any of those things, then I would bring her in to your veterinarian to have her examined.

Are you sure its just a weight gain? Or is the area around the incision swollen? If the area is just concentrated on and only around the incision area (which should be quite small, so it's pretty easy to tell), then it could be a sign of an infection and I would have her examined by the doctor. A week later seems to quick a time for her to noticeably gain weight - its just very suspicious.

Of course some slight swelling and redness is normal after the surgery, if its TOO swollen then it could be a problem. I would sign her up for an exam just to be safe =)

Yes, it actually is very normal. It slows down the cat's metabolism and it makes them get a sort of pot belly that hangs down, like you explained.
