I want to dance... is it too late?

Question Posted Thursday May 28 2009, 8:40 pm

I've always wanted to be a dancer and I have a huge passion for music, but when my parents took my out of dance classes when I was younger because they couldn't afford them, I thought it was too late. I'm 19, now, and I know most dancers have been dancing their whole lives but I really wanted to see what it was like and try to really work hard at it, but I don't know if it's worth it. So I was wondering if any experienced dancers could give me advice... should I take some classes and see if there is anything there? I'm really interested in taking lyrical jazz or something to that effect. I understand that it takes a lot of strength to do this kind of style, but is it possible to work for it? How long does it take to build up enough experience to be a good dancer?

Thanks for your help!

Do you watch the show So You Think You Can Dance? If not, there was a contestant last season named Twitch, who made it to the final 4. You know when he started dancing? His senior year of high school. And he worked hard enough, and trained himself well enough that he was able to get to the finals of the show! Amazing, isn't it?

Id you're serious enough about it and push yourself hard enough, you can be an amazing dancer in a short amount of time.

As for what you should take, I'm not the person to ask. But for my gym class at school, I took beginning dance and the lessons they offered were: Ballet, Jazz, Modern, and Choreography. So, I'd probably suggest starting in those areas.

Best of luck! :)

i have to disagree with the answer below mine.
if you are considering dancing in your future, like professionally, its going to take much more than a year to catch up (i'm training to be a professional dancer (probably ballet) for 13+ years at a pre-professional school and im still building strength and perfecting technique) and i know that financially it may not be possible, but taking regular ballet classes would be really beneficial to you. ballet is the basis of all dance and it will help you gain strength and then you can excel in any kind of dance you try. if you only took a few dance classes you wont really "see anything". it could take up to a year to build up your technique and strength.
if you just want to do it for fun, nothing really serious, i think its definitely worth it! its a great way to stay in shape, gain confidence, and have fun.regardless, i really do recommend taking dance classes.
if you have any questions, you can leave it in my inbox.

If you work really hard and stick to it you can accomplish it. It only takes a year or so to build up enough experience, but that is also if you contribute a lot of time to dance. If it's something you really want don't give up on it.
Good luck!
