A Lost Hair Stylist!

Question Posted Friday May 22 2009, 3:32 pm

Hey there.. I've been Licensed for about 3 years, and I have very very little experience in working in a salon atmosphere. I used to run in and out of my cousins salon helping her out here and there. I really want to get it together and work part-time in a salon, but I've lost my confidence and I feel like I need a mentor. What do you suggest I do, just jump back in there, or GO BACK TO SCHOOL!! LOL! I need to figure something out.. Can you give me any advise?

I'm assuming that your cousin as a mentor isn't an option?
Sometimes it can be hard working for family.
Maybe you could spend a day or two checking out hair salons in your area and talk to the Owners and the other Stylists who work there. Don't just let them interview you, ask them questions as well. Try and see if it's an atomosphere you would enjoy and could spend years in.
Ask about an apprenticeship where you can assist the owner and watch them work and where they will explain techniques to you.
You wont make very much money at first, but when you feel comfortable with your services you can promote yourself, maybe work on commision, until you build a clientele, then you could be a booth renter and your own boss.
Or if you have bills that need to be paid now, and you need more of a full time job, you can always go to a chain salon, like CostCutters, or Famous Hair, or a million of others and stay there for a year or two, be reliable and build a clientele who can't live without you and then move to a privately owned Salon later.
Whatever you chose to do, the best advice I could give would be to "Never let the Client Smell Fear"!
Clients are like wild animals, if they smell fear...they will attack!
Even if you are nervous inside, always act like the professional that you are, and remember you are never going to be able to please everyone.
Hope this helps.
Good Luck to you!!
