Hi... I know that this isn't the easiest of questions... but I would appreciate it if you could give it your best shot... I'm kinda desperate ;)
I'm doing a project on cowboys. My topic is the origin of the cowboy. I've looked on the internet and Google-ed it but all I have is a general answer: that the cowboy is from Spain and originated from the Spaniards. But if I'm going to do an entire project on this topic, I'm going to need to be way more specific (i.e. why did the Spaniards need the cowboy? what opted them to become cowboys?). Also, by origin, I don't think my teacher meant the origin of the AMERICAN cowboy. I think he meant cowboy in general. I mean, before the Spaniards... I need myths, tales, and legends. You know, those kinds of things. It's a project, so I would need a LOT of information. But so far, I've only got like one paragraph that I've gathered from web sources.
Any additional information or advice? Thanks :)

Smartone answered Thursday July 30 2009, 7:23 pm: Well, what is a cowboy? It's a person who herded and cared for cattle on ranches. When the cattle were ready to be moved to market, they rounded them up and took them to market. They did this on horseback as there was no other way. It was their job to keep all the cattle together and not lose one, because each head = $$$. They cattle couldn't get sick or lack water or grazing enroute or they would die and the cowboy was responsible. No different than it is now, only nowadays, the cattle are transported via truck. They get to market faster, but, some still die on the truck. The trucker is responsible for that head and must pay for it.
The cowboy originated from the need to transport cattle and also from the needed to have help handling the animals day to day needs. Feeding, watering, branding, etc.
As far as the Spanish cowboy...no difference. The was a need for someone to tend the cattle. Bottom line...if they had cattle, they needed a cowboy, or they were cowboys themselves.
Go to the library and use the encyclopedias. They will have a wealth of information that the internet won't have and it will be accurate. [ Smartone's advice column | Ask Smartone A Question ]
