Tattoo Ideas

Question Posted Saturday April 11 2009, 10:37 am

So I'm turning 18 in May, and I've been wanting a tattoo for so long. I just don't know what to get or where to get it. I want something relatively small, but meaningful. Not just a little heart, r butterfly or something. I wanted to do something maybe with the word faith. Any suggestions? Thank you

I have 2 tattoos, so maybe I can give you a little insight about what I know personally. :)

Tattoos are something that are really important & take a lot of thought. They are not something that should be spur of the moment. You really need to think out what you want, and when you decide on what you want, MAKE SURE you've thought about where you want it, the consequences & everything for a while. If you decide to get your tattoo & you regret it, there is no taking it back. It is there forever unless you can afford the surgery to get it off.

I would also suggest that since you're 18, DO NOT get your tattoo anywhere extremely visible (like your arm, neck, leg or anywhere else like that. I wanted a tattoo on my lower back when I was younger & I just think it looks so trashy now. Good places for a first time tattoo are your wrist (on the inside), the back of your neck (sides are off limits for a first timer), your shoulder blade, your foot or your hip.

The reason I say not to get it visible is because if you want a really good job one day, like a lawyer, or in an office setting, having a visible tattoo may turn off your employer from hiring you. They want somebody clean cut & nice. If you have a tattoo & they can see it, they probably won't consider you.

If I were you, I would probably suggest you get it on your wrist & small. The smaller you get it, the less the chances people will see it. And I know you might say "But I want people to see it!" and I understand that, but you must understand that your tattoos are not there for other people's enjoyment, they're there for your enjoyment.

As far as prices, every place is different. Also, the price of your tattoo will depend on how the size, location, what it looks like & how long it takes. If it's big, has a lot of detail & will take them a while, the price will go up. If it's small & something they can do in about 30 minutes, chances are it won't cost so much. My first tattoo was $80. My second was $40. You can look up some places online & give them calls to ask because they sometimes don't mention their rates on tattoos, or even if they have them. Some places start out at a certain price. For example, High Voltage (the tattoo shop in L.A. INK) starts at a rate of $200. I saw it on their site. Other places I called started at $60.

So, you really need to shop around before you pick a place. It took me a bit before I finally found a place I liked for my second tattoo. I got my first tattoo in my hometown, but I now live in Los Angeles so I had no idea which places were good, cheap, clean & welcoming. Things like that need to be heavily considered when you choose a place.

When you finally decide on a place, make sure they're clean. If they sit you down & their stuff is already opened & laid out, DO NOT TRUST IT. You want to go to a place where they open their needles & such in front of you because that way you know they're clean. Most places that already have it laid out are dirty & could put you at risk for a disease.

As far as the aftercare, the tattoo artist will tell you all of that, but I'll tell you here just in case. Make sure that after you take off the bandage from your tattoo (they usually make you wait 45 minutes to an hour), that you wash it with soap & water. DO NOT RUB IT DRY. Pat it gently. Same deal goes for the shower. Put some Vitamin D ointment on it (only a little) & then leave it alone. Do this a few times a day. If you go out in a sunny place, put sunscreen on it because the rays from the sun will make the colors fade if you don't protect it & you don't want a new tattoo looking like you've had it for years already. When it starts to scab over; because it will, it's normal) DO NOT PICK AT IT. Picking at it will make your tattoo look like shit. It's going to itch. When it starts to itch, do not scratch. Slapping tends to help but not always. Also, when it's scabbing over, you want to put unscented lotion on it. Your tattoo (depending on size) should heal in about 2-3 weeks. Even after it heals though, you still may want to put sun-screen on it to keep from fading.

I'm sorry this is long, but you're getting a tattoo for the first time & the things you need to consider are endless & really important. A tattoo is really special when you get one & you want to take care of it as best you can. I really hope this helps you & if you have anymore questions, you are free to ask either me, or the tattoo artist. :) Good luck!

Hey,

So my suggestion to you is...I wouldn't get a tattoo until you have your heart set on it. A tattoo is something that will be with you forever not turning back so you want to make sure.

I have been wanting a tattoo since I was 16 and now I am 20 but I haven't gotten one yet because I'm not sure what I want and where I want it. I want something meaningful aswell.

I would investigate different tattoo parlors and ask them a gazzion questions about their equipment and their tattoo expereince and what not.

With respects as to where to get it, what kind of career are you looking into? Because some careers don't like it when their employees have tattoos so make sure you get it in someplace that can be covered up easily.

I hope this helps, happy birthday and good luck =D

Greetings!
First I want to tell you Happy Birthday early. Turning eighteen is a fun time. It opens many new doors. When my daughter turned 18 she informed me she was going to get a tattoo. I knew I could not stop her so I went with her and we researched the different parlors in our area. You need to check to make sure they have a license for all the artists as well as from the local health department. Ask to see where they steralize the instruments. Make sure they use an autoclave for this process. A good reputable parlor will not mind answering all your questions. The best way to find a good parlor is to get online and do a search. I used" tattoo parlors in myrtle beach" It gave a great list of parlors and also websites where you can get free designs.

My daughter has about two dozen tattoos. Most of hers cost about $30 to $40 dollars. I hoe this has helped you.
