Learning to drive.

Question Posted Wednesday March 25 2009, 4:28 pm

15/F/Eastern U.S.
Hi! I just got my permit about a week ago and I'm in the process of learning to drive. I've driven quite a bit, so far.
Well, when I'm driving, I always go the speed limit, but other cars continue to pass me.
If you're driving on a two-lane one-way road, is it normal for cars to pass you when you're slowing down to turn?
It kind of hurts my feelings.
I almost feel sorry for the cars that are stuck behind me. Thanks!

It sounds like you're a safe driver, which is good! Don't worry about the people that pass you. They do that to me, too. And don't let it hurt your feelings- THEY'RE the ones who are probably breaking the speed limit. Like another columnist said, pay more attention to what's happening in front of you than what's happening behind you. It is pretty normal for people to pass when you're slowing down to turn.

I've been driving for two years, and I'm still deathly terrified of passing people on roads where I would have to go into the oncoming traffic lane. So my advice to you is, if you feel nervous about a lot of cars stacking up behind you, pull over and wait a minute or two for them to get further down the road. I've done this plenty of times because I'd rather not have to worry about angry people behind me. I frequently have to drive on this dangerous two-lane highway, so sometimes I just find a random parking lot to pull into and let everyone pass me. Better safe than sorry!

hahah dont worrry girl.
i know exactly how you feel.
i always watch the cars behind me cause they tend to go around me even though im going like a little more then the speed limit
but what that person down there said, there either in a hurry or they never go the speed limit.
my parents always tell me to pay atttention to whats infront of you, not behind you.
let the people next to you, and behind you do what they want
cuase if youre always worried about the other cars, you may be looking and not paying attenion to anything infront of you and if a car is breaking and you dont catch that you can cause major stuffff.
so dont worry about it. youre doing fine (:

Yes, it can be normal. A lot of drivers really don't wanna slow down, and are usually in a hurry. Don't let it intimidate you, and especially don't feel bad for slowing down other cars, if they should get mad, they're impatient jerks. You're a beginner so it can take some time getting used to it.

Hope that helped! : )
