Question Posted Tuesday March 17 2009, 4:11 pm

what do you think the definition for "mentally unstable" is? I've searched google and havn't found a good one. To me, if you're "mentally unstable", you're psychotic, or suicidal, insane, have a severe mental disorder, can't think straight, that kinda stuff. but im not sure, can anyone help?

I don't think "mentally unstable" is a clinical term. As you yourself discovered, there is no clear, categorical definition of the term. It probably exists as a layman's term referring to a host of possible mental disorders, including but not limited to the ones you mentioned above.

Insane is the word you are probably looking for.
That covers most of the things you listed.

Mentally ill is probably a better term than mentally unstable.

Hi, I will break this down:
Unstable....the opposite of stable. Stable being steady, predictably even, level headed, able to make rational decisions and perform rational actions with normal emotion.

Unstable.....would be to NOT be able to do this
to not be steady or level headed
to not be able to do all of the above.
Mentally unstable would be a term used to describe someone that would all of a sudden do strange, emotional, or sometimes violent things and then seem to get over it (quickly or slowly).
There are actual scientific terms for all of these mental problems, like bi-polar, and there are many phobias also.
If you consider yourself or someone you know unstable I would advise getting some counceling as soon as possible to help. Usually mental problems left unattended only get worse.

'Mentaly Unstable' is not a technical term. It's called a colloquialism. It's imformal, inpercise language.

We can talk all day about what we think it means, but no one will really be right. That's why you can't find a good a defination for it. It's not a medical lable, or a diagnoitic term, it's just two words: 'Mental', which means 'about or having to do with the mind' and 'unstable', which means 'likely to change suddenly and create difficulties or danger' that we often use togeather to convey meaning.

It's okay that you think it means psychotic or insane or such... but when you look at the words that make up the phrase the best defination is likely something like: a mental state that is prone to swift and detrimental changes.
