Sex for a Christian

Question Posted Monday March 9 2009, 3:50 pm

Is sex (in marriage) for a Christian just for reproduction? I am a Christian and I don't plan on having sex before marriage. So is sex for a Christian not allowed for anything but reproduction?

Wow. The person who posted prior to me, couldn't have said it better. Amen x 3.
Although I wouldn't go as far as to criticize the contents of the Bible, certain church organizations do, in my opinion, use its contents to excercise control over people. And to say the least, that's really sad. It's certainly not up to them, or anyone else outside of your marriage. The deciding factors should have to do with what your husband wants, want you want, and without a doubt, what God wants.
But as for what exactly God wants, I'm hardly an authority on the manner. You have to talk to Him, and seek His advice through both scripture and prayer. Ultimately you will come to your own conclusions, as everyone interprets His words differently. As long as you're trying to include Him in your choices and in your marriage, you're on the right path.
For me personally, I would tend to agree with the last post - God created men and women (bound by marriage) to enjoy eachother. He has blessed us with the ability to be incredably intimate, and if He didn't want us to enjoy it to the fullest, there probably wouldn't be so many crazy hormonal and chemical reactions going on in our body when it happens! Nothing about our design is an accident. It isn't some dirty physical act, but a spiritual and emotional bond that our bodies happen to facilitate. The Bible does forbid lustful thinking, but I think what one feels for a spouse is (hopefully) far beyond the description of 'lust'. As long as the sexual activity is powered by LOVE, I think it must be sanctioned by God. Love is the greatest gift He gave us, so anything done out of love for eachother is just plain awesome. :)

In the simplest terms, no it is not.

One thing you are going to have to learn and understand is that the rules of a religion change based on who you talk to.

I was raised catholic. Just within the catholic church there are differing views, some think sex is or should be only for reproduction, some think its ok to have it without that in mind but it should still be God centered (that group is almost entirely made up of virgins) and some who think that once you're married, anything goes.

Truthfully, most laws religion made about sex are bullshit, and not from God.

Think about birth control. The catholic church has outlawed the use of birth control. Been like that for decades, its considered a sin.

Similarly, priests are NEVER supposed to have sex, because that somehow defiles "what should be for the lord"

Both of these are fully acceptable to a number of other Christian groups. Baptist ministers marry, and their wives use birth control. (Well, some choose not to, but its ok for them to use it)

Here is my perspective.

Sex is not something you should be afraid of. Sexuality IS a beautiful thing, and when a real tangible love is involved it can become a powerful force in a person's life. Whether you believe in God or not, anyone could agree that human sexuality is a gift. We are the only animals capable of enjoying each other in so profound a way.

Many religions (the Catholics very high among them) have used natural sexual urges as a way to induce shame, and thus control.

Think about it, you make someone afraid of something they want very badly to do. Then you tell them that not only is doing it a sin, THINKING ABOUT IT is. It says it in the bible, "If you think about doing things with a woman, it is the same as having done them"

The point here is, that you make it so that people are convinced that they have been doing terrible things and are horrible sinners, and then you tell them that your religion is the key to forgiveness for the horrible things you naturally do.

These people will do anything for salvation. They'll be a part of your church, they'll raise their children in your church, they'll give you money, power, and influence. Kings, and Emperors, Prime Ministers and Presidents will bow to you.

Thats where the guild over sex comes from. Flawed human beings using God and the gifts of life we've been given for their own personal pursuits of power.

Don't be scared of sex, or the things you want to do. Just be an adult and control yourself until appropriate times. If for you, appropriate times means that its your future husband, thats perfectly fine for you to choose.

When you do finally end up having sex, don't go into it thinking about whether or not its holy, whether or not its gross, or anything like that. Go into it thinking that by making yourself and him happy together you strengthen your relationship.

And nothing could make God happier than a strong married couple.

No its not I looked it up in my cdrom that I get once a year because I am a Jehovahs witness and I found many things on this subject take a look.

The union of a man and a woman as husband and wife according to the standard set out by God. Marriage is a divine institution, authorized and established by Jehovah in Eden. Marriage brings into being the family unit, the family circle. Its basic purpose was the reproducing of the members of the human family, to bring into existence more creatures of the human kind. Jehovah the Creator made male and female and ordained marriage as the proper arrangement for the multiplication of the human race. (Ge 1:27, 28) The first human wedding was performed by Jehovah, as described at Genesis 2:22-24.

Marriage was designed to form a permanent bond of union between man and woman, that they might be mutually helpful to each other. Living together in love and confidence, they could enjoy great happiness. Jehovah created woman as a mate for man by using the man’s rib as a base, thereby making woman man’s closest fleshly relative on earth, his own flesh. (Ge 2:21) As Jesus pointed out, it was not Adam but God who said, “That is why a man will leave his father and his mother and he must stick to his wife and they must become one flesh.” The wording of this text makes it evident that monogamy was the original standard for marriage in the eyes of Jehovah God.—Mt 19:4-6; Ge 2:24.

Well, if you are Catholic, then yes, technicly it is only for reproduction. I am Catholic and this is what I have always been taught by my teachers. That is why married Catholics are not supposed to use ANY form of birth control, even things like condoms, because then you would be having sex without the intent of reproduction.

Sex for a Christian is not only for reproduction, but to show your love for one another, exclusively. The fruit of that love is children.
