Remember to stay true to yourself & love yourself (without being cocky of course). When you have an inner beauty, it is much easier for the outer to follow.
Firstly, do not dress one way just because other people do and you want to please them. If that is the case you would probably just end up feeling awkward. But if you want to dress that way because you like that particular style and that is what you would feel most comfortable and yourself in, then that is a good way to go. Now, I don't believe or condone labels but I'm not going to pretend that I don't know what you're getting at.
You mentioned that you are clueless about what to buy and wear. A little change isn't always bad. Your sense of clothing is not always going to be stationary from elementary school through college. I recommend changing it up moderately so that you get used to the newer stuff. You see what kind of apparel you like and would want to be in.
My advice would be to go to stores that you can afford which have a variety of different clothing. For example, places like Ross or TjMaxx have apparel from all kinds of different clothing stores. If you scour through the Juniors Section you are sure to find things that appeal to you. You can always bring a friend or two along to go shopping with you if you feel like you'd need a second opinion on what looks best. Eventually you'll find it in yourself and your gut feeling will let you know. If you like it, wear it, and don't worry.
Don't worry about not looking exactly like others around you do. The beauty in all of us is our differences. Always be yourself, because yourself is just right. ]
