How do I sign up for school?

Question Posted Saturday February 14 2009, 9:45 pm

Okay so I am a 20/female and my life seems to not be going to well. i never graduated high school (i got my GED) and just decided to do the work thing and not go to college, but i have realized that that was a total mistake!
So I am really wanting to enroll in school, but don't know what to do! I mean I know you are supossed to have your SAT's and stuff like that which i don't have of course.
So that is my main question. what do i need to do before i actually apply to schools if i only have my GED??
Another thing is I used to live in texas, but moved to california about 10 months ago and want to go to college here, but will it still be out of state for me because i'm not sure if i am a resident here yet and if i am then does that mean i will pay normal tuition or out of state??
Also, i have no help with money going to school. I know there are scholarships and stuff like that and was wondering where can i go to look up that stuff??
thanks and hope to hear from someone soon!!

I'm a student in a fairly good public university in my state, so I think I can point you in the right direction. Firstly, try to apply to some lower end colleges. That's not to say you can't get into the better ones, but they typically have lower tuition. Also, about 25% of students drop out of school in their first year of college, so you're chances of getting in are much higher after your first year, especially if you do well.

I don't know whether you are considered a resident of Texas or California. I would go to city hall wherever you live and they should point you in the right direction.

70% of all scholarships are never given out because nobody applies for them. Some of them are strict on requirements, but others aren't. I receive two scholarships that most people didn't apply for. Search FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), and if that doesn't work your academic advisor at any university should be able to point you in the right direction.

I hope you do well. If you need any help finding anything, feel free to ask me. I'm warning you that it will be hard, but completely worth it. I'm from a low income family and I work to pay my bills, but someday things will get better. Remember, what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger, you can do it. Stay strong. SJL.
