Bulimia--sore throat

Question Posted Friday February 13 2009, 4:07 pm

So I have bulimia, and this morning I woke up with a bad sore throat. It hurts to swallow. The thing is, I thought that you have to vomit a decent amount of times before this would happen. I generally do it only a few times a month. Maybe I do it more often than I realize? Anyone have any ideas as to why?

The reason as to why you are getting sore throat after you purge is because the membranes in the throat are sensitive, and the stomach acid that you throw up burns them so this is why it may cause you to have a sore throat and is hard to swallow because your throat is inflamed with acid build up. Believe me i had an eating disorder for 4 years and know alot and can relate to you in this area.

Hope all gets better,

The stomach acid burned up your through,
along with the "puking" reflexes that
made the muscles sore.

Keep it up, and you'll lose your pretty
voice, and end up sounding like a frog.

Clearly your throat is irritating you due to your bad habit. However, you should try to stop your bulimia and in the meanwhile, be drinking plenty of water and tea to help calm down, rehydrate, and soothe your throat. You can do it, I promise!

Well, when you puke, it brings up acid from your stomach, which burns the lining on your throat. This lining doesn't really heal so it doesn't matter how spread out your puking is, you are still doing extreme damage to your throat each time. My mother's friend was bulimic, and she can't talk anymore because its too painful. You should REALLY be getting help for your problem, because bulimia causes SO many problems, its really not worth it.

Each time you throw up, you are damaging your throat, so it's going to hurt eventually. Some people can get away with doing it many times and not feeling anything for a while. Once it starts hurting, it'll only get worse and when you decide to eat or drink, it will burn.

It also has nothingg to do with the amount of times you make yourself vomit. It has to do with your tolerance and it seems you have limited tolerance. Just know you're ruining your body and it's a disorder, ever if you do it once.
