What is the diference between modems and routers

Grossly simplified: A modem is a device for connecting from your system, to another remote system. A router, is a device to connect multiple computers to a single IP address that the modem is connecting to.

So: A house full of computers connect to a router, which is connected to a modem, which is connected to your internet company, which in turn talks to the internet.

Hope that clears things up a bit.
