Since you got the answer for the first part of your question, I'll answer the second.

A veterinary technician usually has at least an associates degree or a bachelors. An assistant typically has no schooling, and get payed less, and are allowed to do less on the job.

What a vet tech can't do:
They cannot do surgeries: however they can prep the animal for surgery, hand the doctor tools, (but usually that consists of getting them some more gauze or a new blade, if you work at a small animal clinic, emergency hospitals its probably quite different, but I have never worked at an emergency facility). Administer and regulate the anesthesia machine, assist in small surgical procedures like draining wounds, but nothing big. (however this can very from state to state, some states you can do more than that)

Techs can do dentals (clean and polish the teeth), but again nothing surgical like pulling teeth or drilling or sawing.

The job largely consists of receptionist work, talking to the owners, weighing animals, taking temperatures, cleaning kennels, and endless nail trims.

I'll be honest, its not something I want to do for the rest of my life, it gets boring after you get the hang of it. I would highly suggest calling up a few of your local animal clinics and just volunteering, or maybe you can even get a job cleaning kennels (but believe me, they'll let you stick around and watch a few surgeries). Get to know the vet, ask him or her questions, so you can really see if that is something you want to do. Just really put yourself in that environment.

What I did was I started volunteering when I was 14, and then I got hired shortly after after I got the hang of things. I worked part time for almost three years and then quit, because it got boring and very repetitive. The job requires lots of patience, good people skills, good animal skills and good thinking skills. I am really glad for my experience however, even though I now know that its not something I want to do.

You have to go to at least a 4 yr college to be a veterinarian. It is a lot of schooling, almost as much as a medicine doctor. 4 main yrs, plus extra schooling, internship, etc. Biology classes in high school will help you get a head start. In Colorado, CSU is the only college that offers a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine(DVM) degree.
