Propoxyphene

Question Posted Tuesday January 6 2009, 10:39 pm

My dad got prescribed this for pain from a cracked rib. I looked it up online and it supposedly kills hundreds of people every year because it poisens you. Does anybody know anymore information about this? I dont want my dad to die.. apparently this is like the worst drug ever. Has anybody here ever taken it? I really appreciate a quick response.

This is a generic brand of Darvon or Darvocet,
both are narcotic drugs. What that means
basically is that taken over long periods of
time, they can become addictive and abused.
THAT is where the problems come in.

So long as your dad takes it only as directed
he will be fine. I don't think his doctor
will have him on them long for cracked ribs.
All drugs have the potential to be abused, of
course, but they have their purpose and
sometimes a person has to take them despite
the risks.

Cracked ribs are very painful! They move just
by simply breathing. So dad needs some pain relief. They heal pretty quickly though so I doubt he will have any problems. Most of those
who get into trouble have long term need to
take the drug, like back problems. :)

You really should question that doctor. Prescribing an opioid no better than aspirin? Dumb move.

As for your dad, as long as he doesn't pull a Heath Ledger and swallow them all at once he'll be good.
