Job and Spring Break

Question Posted Tuesday January 6 2009, 9:41 pm

I'm a teenager. I am thinking about applying for a job at McAlister's Deli. This will be my first job, so I'd like a little advice. I can work pretty much any day of the week except for Mondays, and I'm a "good kid." However, my family is going on vacation for a week over spring break. How do employers generally handle that? How should I approach the situation? Would this make them not hire me? Should I wait until after spring break to apply? Thank you!

I read Dear Abby every day (yes I am freaking weird) and a question with an extremely similar situation came up a few years ago. She said that the proper thing to do is to let them know up front about it. It's completely out of your control anyway, so this won't bother them.

They'll appreciate you notifying them in the beginning rather than having it come out if they need you during the week.

Usually, if you let them know you can't
work that week due to already having a
vacation scheduled, they are OK with it.

When you have your interview, or are hired,
tell them you can work any day but Mondays,
but you do already have a family vacation
scheduled for these days and will be
unavailable that week only.

It shouldn't have any affect on your being
hired. I wouldn't wait to apply. The job may
be gone if you do. Just apply and let them
know. They will work with you if they need help.

Usually you just request off. But a whole week? I dunno, they might want to fire you.
