binger

Question Posted Wednesday December 24 2008, 1:41 pm

I have a horrible problem. I overeat a lot, compulsively, and I think I have binge disorder. It's usually only on days that I'm not doing anything, but I'll go to the freezer and grab a tub of ice cream and take it to my room and eat it all alone. I don't know why either, it's just an impulse I guess. I'm not depressed... I have a lot of friends and a boyfriend, and I'm not overweight, somehow :/ but I always feel awful after I do it, so I just keep eating junk food. How can I stop myself from doing this?? I want to kick the habit before anyone finds out about it, and before it gets worse, to where I start gaining weight.

Hmm.. I am inclined to believe that one of the main reasons you are doing this is because you are bored, sincee you said it is mostly on days where you aren't doing anything. So what do you do to fill some of that time in? EAT! This is where a great majority of eating disorders stem from. Simple boredom, being upset, or stress to our body in general can compell us to eat, mainly because food does make us feel good (at first at least..). Then, regret sets in after the eating is all said and done, and next time you do it, the same thing happens again. This is hwere the vicious cycle just keeps on going and going. The only way you can really stop this for good is to put your mind on the issue and tell yourself plain and simple, you need to stop. My first advice would be try to find a new hobby to get some of your time filled. Play an instrument, play videogames, exercise, partake in sports, the list goes on and on and on. Variety is the spice of life so switch it up a bit and you will never get tired of doing new things. Since you have a boyfriend, spend plenty of time with him. It's amazing what love can do for our bodies. Scientists haven't technically proven it yet, but they believe people who have a partner they are in love with can be healthier people physically and not only mentally and emotionally. I'm not saying a 300 pound alcoholic who has a wife he is madly in love with will be healthier than a single olympic sprinter, but I am saying that the good feelings tied to love can make us feel better, it's pretty amazing. Spend plenty of time with your friends too. If you don't want anyone to find out about this binge eating, then being with people all the time basically eliminates that from happening since you always do it by yourself. Try to get your body doing many things so it won't have to think about constantly getting in the next peice of food. As a precaution, ask your parents to leave the crappy food off of the shopping list. There is a HUGE chance that if the food isn't in the house, you won't be eating it. If you don't want anyone to know about this binging, I can hardly see you waltzing into the nearest grocery store and buying a tub of chocolate ice cream. Get the junk out of the house and eventually it will work it's way out of your daily habits and ultimatley, your lifestyle! Get your mind moving a bit, and I bet things will work out fine for you :) I really wish you best of luck with everything! Dave :)

Hm....I would suggest getting healthier foods around the house. Instead of going out and buying a ton of ice cream maybe buy some of the healthier fudge pops. Try to stay away from all the junk food. Also make sure you get every meal in. If you are skipping any meals this may be one of the reasons you do this. If you start to really get bad you may want to see a doctor. I hope this helps some. =]
