guinea pig

Question Posted Thursday December 11 2008, 6:57 am

Oh my gosh, okay so heres the deal:
I bought my guinea pig at pets mart (girl) and they said that she was "vet certified" and was 3-6 months old.

I noticed she was really fat and was a picky eater, and used the potty ( #2) ALOT.
I only had her a week and just last night I went in to tell her good night, and she had 3 babies (dead) laying around her!!!
SHE Was pregnant the whole time.

Well we took care of the babie, and completly cleaned her cage. But now what.
Could she be older then expected, or could she have been injured, should i hold her differently.

HELP. I know the babies are dead. but it doesn't change the fact she had them. Should i take her to a vet? Call Pets mart or what?

I have a guinea pig and i work at a pet store. Currently i'm in charge of caring for a pregnant mother pig. Guinea pigs can becoem pregnant at 3 weeks old. The babies might have died because she is so young. I would call Petsmart. They usually have a store vert that will take in the sick animal you bought and care for them. That's why they ar vet certified. If not, calling a vet might be hard because most vets can't treat small animals. Most small animals are too small to be operated on or diagnosed. But you can try.

As for carign for the mother, i would let her be for a few days so she can clean herself up. Feed her oranges and romaine lettuce to help her vitamin intake. Even after she's better, keep giving the oranges because need the Vitamin C.

Send me a message if you need more care tips.

i would take her to the vet and call petsmart or wherever you got the guinea pig for records and details. i would also be careful about holding it until it is takes to the vet because if you didnt know it was pregnant there could be a lot of other things you didnt know and it could be a very unhealthy animal, especailly because of the still born babies
