Question Posted Thursday December 4 2008, 9:41 pm

I was wondering if anyone here breeds hamsters or knows of anyone that does. Preferably in the lower penninsula please.

Well, I'm glad that someone actually cares about the genetics of their soon-to-be pets. Pet stores are very uneducated and fairly careless about the conditions and genetics of their rodents. It's always best to seek out a good breeder (preferably one who has been breeding for a few years) before jumping into a new pet. A pet-store hamster may live 3 weeks because of poor genetics and undesirable previous lifestyle while a hamster from an actual breeder may be more tame and friend, healthier, and heartier.

When looking for certain rodent breeders (I purchased a chinchilla and a hedgehog--both considered rodents--from breeders) you can look just about anywhere within a few hours of your local place. Many breeders are willing to meet half-way for little-to-no-cost. This being said, you may be able to look for hamster breeders in your surrounding states. There is one (Woodview Hamstery) in Ohio that may interest you:

And another breeder:

Kevin Kopera
Breeder of syrian hamsters.
Cleveland, Ohio
E-mail: chubalicous1@cs.com.html

And one called The Joy of Hamsters (A Hamstery for Ohio, E. Indiana, W. Pennsylvania, and N. Kentucky):

I am coming up with the River Road Hamstery in Michigan, but they apparently no longer breed or keep hamsters. If I were you, I would attempt to find some sort of contact listing for them and ask them if they know of any decent hamster breeders around.

I found this MSN group that lists a few hamster breeders:

Although the two breeders in Michigan have dead webpages, it may be worth an email anyway, as they may even be able to direct you to someone nearby.

In Brighton, Michigan: (Mellow596)

In Wyoming, Michigan: silknsatinshamstery@hotmail.com (SilkyGirl77)

Please do not attempt to ship a hamster. The stress is likely to lead to a sudden or early death and they are very fragile so they could end up very hurt from the travel.

If it would be closer to get a hamster in Canada then you may want to look through that route. Some small rodents do not need to be health screened or certified to pass from Canadian to U.S. (or U.S. to Canadian) boarders. I would assume that hamsters are one of these, but I am not entirely sure.

I apologize for not being able to find a specific breeder for you in your area. It may be more helpful to you to search for surrounding larger cities that you could drive to or half-way to. Even if a breeder says they refuse to leave their location for you they may be able to direct you somewhere that is just as good!

As a note, if you're traveling soon then you may want to look in areas you will be passing through (or actually GOING to) for local hamster breeders or a breeder that would meet you there. I know there are many, many rodent shows and there are tons of Hamster "Clubs" that people have joined into. I'm not sure if hamsters actually have any sort of "show" they do annually but it's worth a shot to look if you're willing to make a special trip (although, if you're going to make a special trip for a hamster then, personally, I would just find a breeder that I was happiest with and visit near them for a new hamster friend).

I wish you luck in your hamster search! If you have any more questions please feel free to ask me! :)
