I have a brother in law who has done this
for a living. 200 dollars would be just
a touch up job, not a major paint job.
In all honesty you would be looking at
several thousand for a full paint job.
Metallic is more expensive too.

Now, what you could do, if you have the
time and/or patience is do it yourself.
There are plenty of online how tos I bet.
You could pay as you go, learn something
that could be useful in the future, and
boy you'd be proud of that ride!

Just an added bonus...the guys will be
wanting to discuss how you did this and
that. Great way to get into conversations.
I've done my share of body work on my
own car. Its time consuming, but fun. :)

Your mom basically hit the nail on the head. It would be extremely rare nowadays to find a paint job less than 200 dollars, actually lets call it pretty much impossible as long as you're not doing it yourself. Body shops will charge you for the paint, the clear coat (the shiny layer that goes on after the actual color), and worst of all, the labor. To paint over what you already have, you must have your paint prepared by ussually scuffing the old paint so the new layer will adhere to the old one. Technicians charge a ridiculous amount of money per hour to have your car worked on, and an overall paint job won't be very speedy. With a metallic purple paint.. you'll easily be over the 500-600 dollar range for paint alone. It will cost you quite a bit trust me! As for the comment on buying a purple car.. that actually isn't too bad of an idea.. the body shop is somthing you'll want to avoid if you don't want to spend alot of money. Hope this helps you out! Dave
