Cell Phone Companies

Question Posted Sunday November 9 2008, 12:14 pm

I am about to go on an interview with a cell phone company. Do they generally get paid hourly plus commission or how does that usually work? Also, what are some other pros/cons to the job?

Thanks for your help.

Cell phone sales are usually paid straight commission unless you don't earn enough commissions to earn minimum wage, in which they will pay you minimum wage because it's required by law.

If you don't make more than minimum wage, on average, then you probably won't be there very long anyway ;)

If you're selling anything to the public you will have to deal with stress. People will come in, wanting a quick-but-efficient job done. People WILL come to you when something you haywire, thinking that you will magically be able to explain and fix their cell phone or cell phone bill. You will get people trying to rip you off, probably daily, claiming that so-and-so told them they could get $20 off or whatever crazy lie they can come up with on spot.

If you like people then you'll get to meet plenty of them and converse about their lives. People will probably tell you why they're purchasing the phone and you may even play a part in which service plans they purchase for it based on why they need it. With a friendly face, smile, and attitude, you can make people's lives brighter that day simply because they stopped to ask how much a Blackberry from your company would cost.

My boyfriend and I stopped at the Appalachian Wireless booth in the local mall one evening to inquire about monthly service plans for their cell phones. The woman was such a nice, friendly woman that it gave us a lasting experience of the place. She was helpful, smiled a lot, and gave good explanations of the plans that were available in our area. We told her how we were looking to purchase a VERY affordable phone and plan for a friend in need at the time and she was more than happy to assist us. THAT is what you have to keep up though all day long--that sort of attitude, even after customer has ranted to you for an hour about how much your company is "jipping" them on this-and-that.

During your interview, it is completely acceptable to inquire about wages and such. If you've already put in an application then they already know if you've worked with that cell phone company yet or not, and, if you haven't, they already know that you're wanting know about the wages. They are human too ;) just relax and ask them what you need to know. They KNOW you're wanting the job for cash, not just because you have a silly cell-phone-sales fetish ;)

I hope your interview goes well and you find all the information you need about the job right away. If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask me!
