when do you say?

ok so stupid Q here:::
when a docter or nurce asks you about your last period do you say when it started or when it ended?
and for ppl on friendfertilit.com::
do you mark every day your on it?(have the red dot on the day)
or just the frist day or the last day?

I always just give them the span... like "last week" or "about a month ago" and they seem okay with that.
