It's so stupid, but.

Question Posted Friday October 3 2008, 9:28 pm

I get so shy when eating in front of others. I like tense up. It's awkward & I can't live like this. I have no problem with the food I'm eating...I'm just insecure...how can I get past this?!

Well my boyfriend is the exact same way. He won't even eat in front of people at school. There are quite a few people like this actually. It's just that they are self conscious. It's normal to be this way. What I would suggest is practicing eating in front of people. Try your friends first and then maybe you will get over it. I wish you luck. =]

The previous answer is really great.
I wanted to let you know that it is perfectly normal to feel that way. I actually read about something similar in Reader's Digest recently. Here is a link to the article:

A lot of people feel self conscious eating in front of people. Sometimes I feel it too. The truth is, we all are aware that eating looks awkward, but we are also more likely to be thinking about ourselves than looking at other people eating. Do you notice how other people eat? You probably notice them eating, but don't pay much attention to what they look like. I like the suggestion below to just go eat in public. Pick a place where you aren't likely to be around people you know. Then, if they were actually judging you (they won't be) it wouldn't matter because you'd never see them again. Also, when eating with friends and such, focus on their conversation and other distractions. That may help you to not think about what they may or may not be thinking about. And, if they are chatting about the cute guy at a nearby table, you know they aren't watching you eat.
If, however, you think this is becoming a serious problem (you find that rather than being shy, you become totally unable to eat), you may want to talk to a professional.

I know EXACTLY how you feel. I use to be the same way. When me and my friends would grab some lunch, i wouldnt want to eat with them. Id just get a drink because eating in front of people felt strange. Even at school, or partys it was awkward.
I got over it though....and you should too :]
its not wrong to eat in public. Especially if other people are. Just remember that its not a big deal. People dont pay as much attention to things as we may think.

So this is what i want you to do. Go out, just one time, some where where you're around people...at lunch, the mall, where ever....and eat =)

While you're eating look around and see why you're so nervous. Are people staring at you? Laughing? Anything? Or are you just another person whos eating their food?

Chances are you'll see that its normal. Nobodys really gonna care or notice. Everybody eats in front of people.

Good luck :]
