How can I tell if I'm experiencing hair loss or hair breakage?

Question Posted Wednesday September 24 2008, 2:51 pm

I am letting my hair grow out from a very short pixie hairstyle to something much longer, ideally. I haven't gotten my hair cut in three and a half months now. Lately I've noticed a lot more hair loss on my pillow and when brushing my hair (more hair buildup on the brush as well).

How can I tell if I am actually losing my hair (it falling out) or if it's just breaking off somewhere on the shaft?

Chances are it is breakage combined with normal loss. On average, people lose around 100 hairs per day. Your hair is, presumably, longer now than it was three and a half months ago, so the hair that you lose is a lot more noticeable. Same number of hairs, just longer. Longer hair will take up more space on your brush. It is possible that you get more tangles with longer hair, and pull more loose when brushing. Also, even when trying to grow out your hair, you should get it trimmed regularly. The ends do get dry and brittle and can break, which ultimately keeps your hair from growing out nicely.
Is your hair curly at all? If so, or even if not really, go to the library and find "Curly Girl" by Lorraine Massey. There are some great hair care tips in there that will get your hair to be a lot healthier and grow out nicer. And, instead of using a brush, use a wide toothed comb. It will pull out less hair, as well as cause less friction. Friction just adds to the brittleness and breakage.

k your hair is definitly falling out when u notice a big build up of hair on ur clothing and bed and brush you should probably do something bout it i would go to a nearby department store and look for some hair products that will help try a few brands and use the one that works best or go to a nearby salon and ask them if they can give you the right treatment.
