Can you develop cancer (specifically breast cancer) from being bruised?
Question Posted Wednesday September 24 2008, 4:08 am
Can breast cancer be caused by getting hit/punched/pinched/bruised in the breast area? My mom had breast cancer and had a breast removed some years ago from the cancer, and when I got hit in the chest with a tennis ball a few days ago I bruised. My mom started going on and on about my likelihood at developing cancer. She kept saying that my chance of developing breast cancer was very, very high now since they were high to begin with from my mom having cancer previously.
My best friend said it isn't true that you can get cancer from having your breast bruised. She was in a car wreck not too long ago and had her chest all bruised up from it and never developed cancer. My mom told my best friend that her chances of developing breast cancer was much higher now.
I just want to know if it's true that you can get cancer after being bruised. I am really afraid of getting cancer and want to do everything I can to prevent it from developing in my body so I need to know if I am at a higher risk of cancer now.

Injury to the breast does not cause breast cancer. If the breast is bruised badly, there may be an accumulation of blood under the skin that can feel like a lump. The body will reabsorb this over time, just as any bruise heals. [ karenR's advice column | Ask karenR A Question ]

You are at slightly higher risk of developing breast cancer later in life if only because your mother has had it. I suggest that you talk to your doctor about breast care and what to look out for in the future. Also, look into the health history of your female relatives and hopefully that will help you put this all into perspective. If caught really early, breast cancer, as you know because of your Mom, can be dealt with. You should be breast aware, but please don't let it blight your younger years. Just to reiterate, the chances of developing breast cancer by being hit in the breast are almost negligible otherwise every woman would develop it. I hope this helps you a little, but please get professional advice just to put your mind at rest. Good luck. [ Elcee's advice column | Ask Elcee A Question ]
