Vegetarians...healthy or not?

Question Posted Wednesday September 24 2008, 2:58 am

I was considering trying the whole vegetarian thing. I won't be doing it because of "animal rights" or anything like that. Instead, I am looking to do this strictly to improve my overall eating habits.

More than likely I would still eat fish and occasionally chicken. My question to you is:

Is following a vegetarian diet any healthier than a normal one?

Vegetarians can be a lot healthier, but only if you eat the RIGHT way. Even vegetarians can be unhealthy if you don't get the proper vitamins & minerals and eat too much junk food.

You need to make sure you eat a lot of diversity in your diet. A good rule of thumb is to think of your plate as a pie chart for nutrition: a quarter of it needs to be protein (ie beans, tvp, meat, tofu, etc), another quarter of it needs to be grains (brown rice, pasta, whole wheat bread, etc) and half of it needs to be vegetables!

Eat fruit for something sweet and don't be afraid to try something new! You need to take a multivitamin for vegetarians and also make sure you get a vitamin b12 supplement or eat things with vitamin b12 in it (meat is the main source, but you can also eat Red Stars Nutritional Yeast because it's fortified with b12. i sprinkle it on pasta!).

Make sure you research what vitamins and minerals you need, recipes you want to try and what foods contain what essential nutrients necessary to your new diet. I just recently became vegetarian and I made sure I researched what I needed to do to make sure i'm not deficient in anything! If you have any more questions pertaining to this, feel free to ask!

I have been a PROUD vegaterian for 4 years. it all depends on if you eat RIGHT. by that i mean even meat eaters dont eat right all the time.. so just make sure you get enough protein.. through nuts, beans, cheese, eggs, fishes if your going to eat them.. ect. but either way stayign away from the major bad things such as very high sugars, sodiums, and fats are present in a veg or meat diet. So yes. it deffiently can be more healthy.. as long as you do it properly.. do alittle reading and im sure youll do great.

Being a vegetarian can be healthier than a regular diet because you would be eating fruits and vegetables instead of junk food. The down side is that if you want to be a vegetarian, you have to pay close attention to your intake and make sure that you are getting all of the protein and some fats that your body needs. When you are not a vegetarian your body usually gets those things in abundance where you may not even realize it. Being a vegetarian can be a good thing as long as you are serious about making sure that you are doing it right and not depriving yourself of what you need to live healthy. So, just stay on top of it and you will enjoy all of the benefits.

in some ways its healthier but in other ways its not for example vegetarians do get more nutrients and vitamins but they dont get the fat or carbohydrates they need which is unhealthy so basically their the same its just that some people overdo the whole fat eating thing and become obese if they controled how much fat they take in they would be fine i hope i helped :)
