What you really should do is take up a regular sport/exercise, like join a soccer league at your town or YMCA (while it depends how old you are).
What works really well for losing weight fast is hard workouts for 1-2 hours a day. I'm in high school and run cross country (full-fledged running) for two hours, 5 days a week. It pulled me into shape FAST. Try running about 3 miles a day down your street (you can use a pedometer for this) and do it every day. You'll see results in no time. By cardio I mean walking/running, etc. Sit-ups won't get you a flatter stomach, they actually just build muscle. So sometimes, they might build muscle over the already existing layer of flab.
You might feel right now that you're not making progress, but you shouldn't see actual results for at least six weeks. Like, right after you work out one day, you aren't going to feel automatically in shape. These things take time.
