How to tryout for Girls Volleyball in the Olympics?

Question Posted Sunday August 17 2008, 5:55 pm

I'm 14, going to be 18 by the next olympics. Im on the varsity team of my highschool, as a freshman (OH). But like.. I don't get the nomination process and all.

Do you just play really well and some scout will pick you out and it all happens or what? And also whats the shortest a Volleyball player has been in the Olympics? Cause now I'm nearly 5'5", though I probably will grow a couple more inches in the following years cause everyone else in my family is like just about 6'0"

. Luckily, I dont know how but I can jump really high, like me vs. my sister who's 5'9" i can jump just about as high as she can, while other kids my height, some can't even jump as high as the net or they're barely over.

Like I love volleyball, coming from New Jersey which is pretty new to the sport (may move to texas next year which would be good) but I've been doing clinics and camps since I was 11, played club in a year and already have gotten pretty good. So like do I have any chance for the future? and yeah please answer my other questions :)

Btw I'm from America. Oh yeah, also I have Cameroonian nationality (100%) but was born in England. I still have my British passport.. can I still participate in the American Olympics or I'd have to do it in England? Or if I change to being an American citizen could I? I'm confused on that too.

Once again thanks for reading this really long question(s)!

Not trying to kill your dreams here, but to play college or professional volleyball, being tall is a MUST. Just because everyone in your family is over 6 ft, that doesn't necessarily mean you will be too. My friend's parents and brother are at least 5'10, but she's only 5'5 and hasn't grown since. Sadly, you can be amazing, jump equally as high as tall girls, have amazing stats, but if you aren't tall, then colleges really won't take a second look at you.

Anyways, being on a high school team isn't enough. You have to play on the BEST club teams in the state, and be one of the best players in the country. You get on the Olympic U.S. team by being the best in the COUNTRY and one of the best in the world.

Yes, you have to get scouted, but nobody will find you if they don't notice you. The way to get noticed is to be ridiculously amazing. When I say you have to play with the best teams, it's because that's where the best players are. You want to be around good players so you can be on their level.

My sister was an all-state volleyball player in high school, a freshman starter on varsity, and in the newspaper like every week. She played for the best teams in the state and would drive 1.5 hours twice a week just to go to practice. However, as amazing as she was, she's only 5'3, so she couldn't play in college. There are some short players out there, but it's very uncommon.

I believe you have to be a U.S. citizen in order to represent the U.S.

Anyways, good luck and know that you have to invest a lot of time, money, and sweat into this if you are serious, and most of all, you have to LOVE what you do with a passion. You can only be so good if you aren't passionate about it.
