my family and a tattoo

Question Posted Sunday August 10 2008, 4:59 pm

I'm 17 years old, starting my sophomore year in college. I'm a pretty good student, but I guess I could be better. (I usually get A's and B's, but I know I'm capable of getting better grades.

I have two jobs (veterinary assistant/receptionist and I also work for a small business).

I'm responsible, smart, nice, etc. And I want a tattoo and I'm not allowed. My parents just can't stand what they look like, even though I'm getting one that will be hidden under clothes and its small AND it actually means something to me and says something about me.

How can I convince my parents that tats are really not that bad and I won't turn into a bad or sleazy person just because I get one. And by the way, its important to me that my parents don't mind me getting a tattoo, I don't mind waiting until I'm 18, but I want my parents to support my decisions so there won't be any grudges or bad feelings. How do I go about doing that.

Reestablish to them how you are a good student and a hard worker who has good common sense. Show them how responsible you are and that the tattoo you want has a clear meaning and is not just some senseless and trashy design. Let them know that you have thought about getting it for a long time and have picked an area where the tattoo will not affect future jobs.

Perhaps try doing some research and finding out the percentage of people age 18-30 have tattoos. Point out that many doctors, lawyers, and other 'successful' people have tattoos.

Tell them that tattoos are completely safe, no longer do people have to worry about infection and disease upon picking a respectable tattoo parlor.

The only other thing I can think of is getting them to realize that a tattoo does not make you a different person. You will be exactly the same as before, only you will have a small form of self-expression that will mean a lot to you.

good luck.
