Like someone else said, the Mid-west is probably your best bet. I live in the Mid-west and really the only thing we get is an occasional tornado. But then again I'm from Michigan so I'm like the farthest end of it ;]
If you're in the center of the mid-west, there are windstorms, snowstorms, violent thunderstorms, etc. But I would say Ohio, Michigan, Indiana and Illinois are the safest because really the only thing we have is snow storms, but they usually aren't that bad.

California has earthquakes. You don't want to live in Virginia or Maryland because Washington D.C. is near there and New York no. Alaska and Hawaii are far-ish away which is not good either.
