What can I do to show appreciation?

Question Posted Wednesday August 6 2008, 4:55 pm

I want to start doing random acts of kindness to the people around me each day (basically my community). I know they are important to my life and I really want them to know that I appreciate having them around.

Some people I'd like to do these acts for don't really know me at all, but they are constantly around me (like coworkers and acquaintances I see daily but don't really talk to). I want to brighten their lives a little though so they know that somebody out there appreciates them being around.

Anyway, can I have ideas for random acts of kindness to various people in my daily routine?

Some ideas on how to remain anonymous would be nice too.

Well you can always start by giving them compliments. They help boost their self-esteem and it makes them feel better about theirselves. Also, one day you could buy them a snack and just drop it by like it was no big deal. For example, you could make a cake and cut slices of it and ask people if they want a peice. You could just say, "Hey would you like some of this cake i made last night?" Just some things like that make people say "Aww, she's nice." or "Aww, he's nice." Hope this helps!

This is a very nice idea.

You can start with simple things like compliments and smiles. Compliments help boost confidence and make people feel good, and smiles go a LONG way.

Other than that, you can make little notes with inspirational sayings on them. I know that I found one once and it totally made my day. You can stick them in mailboxes or lockers at school.

A few other ideas:
- Make cookies and leave them for somebody at work.
- Leave flowers for somebody at work.

I think this is a great idea and we should all be doing these things. Even the smallest "gift" can really turn someone's day around for the better.

I found this website that many people have entered information on about this very subject:

For anonymous idea, I would definitely find a way to send a note to each person you want to thank. You can type them to conceal your handwriting and leave each note in a place that he person checks frequently (like in their locker, on their chair, in their mailbox). Make the note bright and cheerful so for some added niceness. For neighbors and stuff, well, mailboxes and doorsteps would probably be great places to leave nice little things.

This link on that site gives you lots of ideas on how to show kindness in various ways:

Such as:

Make cookies and bring them in for break time. Remember to offer everyone one/some.

Send flowers to your co-workers (even just one coworker at a time would be nice and make them feel extra special)

Leave a piece of candy/fruit/snack/etc. at every co-worker's desk before they arrive

Leave a cake central area anonymously with a Thank-You note

Send a nice email to the people you know emails of

Drop enough money into someone's mailbox and a card attached to let them know that lunch is on you

Help serve dinner at local soup kitchen.

Leave flowers on your neighbor's doorsteps before they get up in the morning

Visit elderly in your neighborhood to give them some company (or help them spruce up the yard even)

Pick up some fast food ($1 menu burger even) and give it to homeless people on the streets

Leave an extra tip after lunch out (remember: 15-20% is normal tip)

While out to lunch, pick up (pay for) somebody else's bill when you pay for yours--even if you don't know them.

Bring out cold drinks for neighbor's mowing their own lawns

Visit the local animal clinic and ask to pay so much on a random person's vet bill

Volunteer at various locations (animal shelters, nursing homes, women's shelter, etc.)

Leave a note in your mailbox for your mail-carrier

Leave enough change at a phone booth for a call or two

Here are a few other sites for kindness acts (some are inspiring stories) that may give you neat, unique ideas:
