Wisdom teeth!

Question Posted Wednesday July 16 2008, 8:07 pm

Hey, so on friday, i have to get my wisdom teeth out. i'm 15 so it's not really like the roots have really grown in or anything. but i'm still really scared. like, i hate shots, and of course they have to give me and shot, and they are sticking tubes through my nose. how far do the tubes go in? and how long does the pain last (like day wise, how many days does the pain last?)i'm just reallyyyyyy scared. please give me advice and answer questions! thanks!

oh yeah, i HATE pain with a passion! i can't stand a lot of pain and i'm just really freaking out. i'm so scared. help! thanks again. k, acutally i have one more thing. so i know that you say some pretty wacky stuff when you wake up. well, i have secrets from my parents that they don't really need to be knowing. like, i had this bf they didn't really know about and i had him over when they were at work, and we didn't do anything bad, just hung out, but anyways, will i say anything about that when i wake up????.

You won't say anything too stupid, haha. I kept asking if it was over, and demanded repeatedly to see my teeth, to prove that the procedure was actually done. The only thing I remember saying is "Ryan [my ex] is a meanie. I wanna go mini golfing with Jeff!"

Anyway the pain is bad but it goes away. Take the meds they give you as directed, I had oxycodone and it resulted in the weirdest dreams ever and made me sleep a LOT. Get icepacks, like the squishy kind for injuries. You'll be icing your face as much as humanely possible.

You won't be eating much for the first couple days, all I was able to eat was Jello and a couple quarts of pudding. And I hate Jello.
Spaghettios can be swallowed easily and just mushed with your tongue. If you're craving real food it's a good item to try.

I'd say the pain lasted for about five days, gradually weaning to a dull ache that was muted with simple OTC ibuprofen [or a prescription for it if you get that].

Don't worry too much. It's a very common procedure and in the long run you'll be grateful you had it done. And even if you do say something related to having someone over, whoever you're with in recovery will assume it's nothing more than mindless babbling. Because that's all you'll say anyway. Really, you're fine =]

i just had my wisdom teeth taken out two weeks ago. i had laughing gas & an IV, they didnt put tubes up my nose, so i dont know about that. i've never even heard of that.

i was in terrible pain for the first 4 days. after that eating was extremely uncomfortable for the next like 3 days. it's also weird to eat with the stitches bc you can feel them. you'll probably have the dissolving stitches which dissolve in 7-10 days. be sure to rinse with salt water often bc that helps them dissolve faster. try to keep ice on your mouth for at least the first day.

also do NOT drink with a straw until the gums are healed. they say you can eat ice cream and stuff, but for me, cold stuff made the pain worse, so i stuck to warm things like soup and scrambled eggs. if you've had braces before, its like the pain you went through the first few days when they were put on. its gonna make your whole mouth and/or head sore. i couldnt eat, sleep, or hardly talk for 4 days without it hurting too bad.

you more than likely wont say anything loopy. i didnt, and i dont know anyone who has. when you wake up, you'll just feel really drained, not really high or crazy or anything.

be sure to take your medicine! but DONT take more than it says. i made that mistake and almost overdosed. i was on oxycodone every four hours for 3 days, plus extra strength tylenol or ibuprofen, and one day i took more than i should have because i was hurting soo bad, and it made my heart race and i got really hot and felt really sick. so dont do that!

any more questions, inbox me.

I think it all depends on the person. But from what I've heard, it's not the most fun process.
A few weeks ago my friend had to get 4 wisdom teeth pulled at once. I went with her. She can't really tolerate pain and they didn't knock her out or anything. Needless to say, I could hear her yelling from the waiting room =X. And I heard the shots kinda hurt too. However, if you're going to be unconscious during it I don't think it will be as bad. After that she was in pain and couldn't really speak normally for the next like 4 days. They put her on vicodin (which isn't the best, since she's been trying to get off that stuff for over a year now) and she became pretty dependent on it for those next few days. So if you get any strong medicine like that, make sure you don't overdo it. You'll just become dependent on it for every minor pain. So sometimes you just gotta deal with the pain to get over it faster.

I don't think you'll have to worry about spilling any secrets. You may be really loopy and say just silly things, but probably no deep dark secrets.

I know you're scared & this might not have exactly help ease your worries, but I told my friend that it wouldn't be that bad (people had told me that) and then when she was in pain I felt horrible. Sometimes it's best to know how bad it will be going in so it won't be as shocking. And who knows, since the roots aren't grown in it might not be bad at all. She's 20 so hers most likely were.

Either way GOOD LUCK! And I hope it goes well and doesn't hurt all that bad. And best of wishes for a speedy recovery!!
