I actually was reading "Chicken Soup for the College Soul", and it had someone's essay that they got accepted with. It was completely hilarious, and it was all a bunch of crap.

He claimed he did these amazing things, that were so outlandish, but it wasn't really bragging about it. He obviously didn't do any of these things, because they were impossible. He said he read Moby Dick, Paradise Lost, and a million other books in one day, and then he still had time to refurbish an entire room in the afternoon.

Then he ended with something like this:

"With all of these things, I have never once been to college."

You might not want to take that approach, but I'm assuming if you make the essay-readers laugh a bit, without being too out-of-line, you might get them to accept you.

But if you want to take the serious route, I suggest talking about an experience that changed you, but not something that is seen on the rest of your application, as the person below said. Write about something they wouldn't be able to tell from your application.

And of course, do many revisions ;]

I wrote my college essay on my love of creative writing, since it's a personal activity of mine and not a club or "official" extracurricular activity, so their wasn't anywhere else to mention it. I know another guy who wrote about racists leaving a burning cross on his lawn, and how he came to forgive them. Basically, chose something simple, and something that tells more about yourself that isn't apparent on the rest of your application. You could write about how you said no to drugs or saved a cat from a tree. Don't repeat what they can see on your application-that is the kiss of death for college essays. Just choose something simple about your life, and write it the best that you can. And make sure it shows more of your personality in a positive way. Don't write a sob story about how your brother died or something. And if you went on a community service church trip to Mexico, DO NOT WRITE ABOUT IT! Colleges get a million of those. You want yours to be unique. Once written, have many people edit it for you. Rewrite it, then send it in.
