No matter what...the first couple times...you're probably going to burn. Just because your skin isn't used to it.
But to control how tan you get...it's better to tan for many shorter sessions than for a few longer sessions.
Another thing that helped me when I was tanning, I used a tanning lotion meant for tanning beds that had a self tanner built into it. And I did burn a little bit, but because the self tanner was in the lotion...that made me look tan and by the time the self tanner had worn off my real tan was there and I wasn't burned anymore.
