Singing

Question Posted Saturday June 7 2008, 4:38 am

17/f

I play guitar and I really love to sing. I can sing okay to most songs. Some I do better than others. How can I improve my singing?

Thanks

I am a proffesional singer, so I think I might be able to help:

1.) Take a voice lesson class. You can get some information on them at your local community center.
2.) {piano needed} play do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, do on the piano. Practice that way.
3.) Practice, practice, practice!!!
4.) Warm-up your voice before you sing. This helps you so your voice doesn't crackle on higher notes.
5.) Make sure the songs you are singing are good for your voice. -Different people sound good on different songs. Find a style that is right for you

Hope that helps-and keep on singing!!
Musically yours,
Lys

If you have a piano (or you can just use your guitar), train your vocal cords to learn a new note. Just play the octave[s] your voice can sing without going into harmonic singing. Then, go up a note (or down, which ever you prefer) to broaden your voice range. You should only try and get 1 note a week and no more or it'll strain your cords too much.

Try and learn voice vibarato [sp?} Truth be told, I don't know how to do this. It just comes when you sing enough (specifically opera type of singing or songs with long held notes like Evanescence, Mariah Carey, Emilie Autumn, and their types of songs are examples) Don't move your mouth or use your stomach to do the vibarato, though.

Maybe you should consider registering at a conservatoire. These places have really experienced and talented people, they would be your teachers there and would teach you all you need to know about guitar or singing professionaly, and you attend classes there the number of times you need in a week and then sometimes, there would also be like something more like gigs or small parties or something that they would sign you up to sing in, so you'd rehearse infront of real audience.
Its awesome these places and they are serious there, so you can go there if your like really serious about this and you really wanna take this to a professional level.

(Like Fordmann said) Going up or down an octave to match your voice is your best bet. If you have a really hard time with it still, you can always try to change the key to something a bit more friendly to you, just don't forget to change the key of the instrumental part too if you do that. Practice like hell - and if your range means anything to you, don't smoke. I've been an on-and-off smoker for years, and when I haven't been smoking (for months+) I have a drastically higher range then when I do smoke.

I've played guitar an sang along time. Just like you my singing wasn't that good until the last couple of years. I'm not saying I'm great but I've improved tremendously. I discovered that I was trying to hard. I was trying to sing it like the original artist and was missing my octaves. I am a male a have a low voice. I don't know about your voice, bu you may have a lower or higher voice.
As your singing are you having a hard time reaching notes- either high or low? You have to find your natural voice.
If you find yourself reaching up or reaching down, then you are not in your natural singing octave. Try singing with while asking yourself this question- is this easy or am I struggling? If you are struggling, try to lower it an octave. If that doesn't work raise it an octive. You know your voice better than anyone. Is it higher or lower than you are singing? RElax and concentrate on making it easy, where the words flow out easy. It will take some practice to do this. You have to find yourself, so to speak. You can do it. I had to learn to sing lower because naturally I ty to sing higher than I'm wired for. I think by conscientiously changing octaves, depending on your voice, whether up or down you will find where you wanna be.
I hope this helps. I wish someone would've told me this 20 years ago.
