Yes. Even though it sounds weird, it is true. I'm in a psychology class, and we were learning about addictive personalities and the possible causes. Genetics has something to do with how easily you get addicted to something, as well as the environment you're put in when you grow up. In other words, if you're a baby in a womb and your mom smokes (or has an addictive personality), you are more likely to have psychological problems, such as dependence on certain substances. It also makes you more likely to pick up smoking, drinking, drugs, obsessively later in life. As far as being a child, if you're around your parents and they smoke all the time, that not only gives you secondhand smoke but it can make you way more likely to try smoking later because it's become "normal" to be around cigarettes. It's a factor of both nature and nurture- your genes play a part (whether or not your relatives have addictive personalities) and your environment does as well. Since the mother would have a dependence on nicotine, it would be possible for the baby to literally go through withdrawal after birth (or be born premature, birth defects, etc). Anyway, I hope this answered your question.

I just did a health project on babies that were affected by the mother's use of illegal drugs. With any illegal drug, the baby will most likely be born premature, have brain damage, the woman is more likely to have a miscarriage, etc. The baby can be addicted to the drug and they will suffer from withdrawal symtoms. You can use google to find exactly what drug has what withdrawal symptoms.
As for alcohol and smoking, I'm not sure if the baby will necessarily become addicted, but they will be smaller than normal, and like the other columnist said, can suffer from Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.

I smoke, and my kids never showed signs of withdraw after birth. However, I smoked very little during pregnancy.
I would be willing to say that if an mother drinks all through pregnancy, of course the child will likely go through withdraws, as well as suffer brain damage from Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.
One time, when working in a doctor's office, we had a baby patient who's biological mother was a crack-head. The child was born premature and addicted to crack.

you mean while pregnant? alcohol and smoking cause a wealth of problems other than addiction. i do know that crack cocaine and heroin addictions fully transfer over.
