I started to bring up fun experiences from the past, and that would get someone else talking and I would join in the conversation. The simplest thing to do would be just to start talking about random things. They may have absolutely no relation to anything, but at least it gets the group talking.

Little jokes from movies and TV shows that your friends can relate to help move conversation along. Talk about things you and they are interested in and if you feel an awkward silence come along, feel free to brake it with something simple, random, and witty.
